Wednesday, March 26, 2003 - Day 55

If you had to pick one song to hear on your car stereo for the duration of a cross-country road trip, what would you choose? That's easy. Rhapsody, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

So far we've heard it twice and we've rocked out to the brink of physical and emotional exhaustion each time. Maybe the looping track wouldn't be such a safe idea after all - that break to the irresistibly head-banging crescendo (preceding the lyrics "so you think you can stone me and spit in my eye") could quickly whiplash some weary heads.

Honestly though, it seems possible lately that our trip is lacking a little something. Well, the travel is one obvious thing and the, uh, drivable car is another, and of course a destination might be good…but none of that could remedy this ersatz feelin'.

Like a superhero needs a special power and a 'scantily' needs a 'clad', this trip needs a theme song. No kidding. For all those times when we're driving long into the night in search of a camp spot, or while we're rearranging all our travelin' crap for the eighty-seventh time while hunting for some stupid thingamajig that was in the glove box all along, or when our tire blows on a lost and desolate stretch of Route 66 - we'll need a soundtrack to make all those bleak moments seem like more of a musical. Think Jimmy Stewart doing the Charleston into the pool in "It's A Wonderful Life." Think Mathew Broderick singing Danke Schoen in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". Think Shaft. Think big.

But seriously, think about it. Music mutes all the querulous crossfire and amplifies all the good times. So, let's hear it. Your suggestions, right here, right now. If we like it, and maybe even if we don't, we'll make a CD compilation of all your songs and send it to you for Christmas.
